Santa Clara Gets Its July Back: The Programming Boom Hiding Behind the World Cup

For three weeks in June, the map of Santa Clara had a hole in it. Tasman Drive was closed. Marie P. DeBartolo Way was closed from late May through July 3. The San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail, the shortcut half the neighborhood uses to get to work, was gated shut on match days from as early as 6 a.m. If you live near Levi's Stadium, you learned the Great America Parkway / Lafayette / Calle De Luna detour by heart.

The six World Cup matches are done. The July 1 Round of 32 was the last one. What most residents haven't noticed yet is that the city didn't build all that "Celebrate Santa Clara: Where the Mission Meets the Moment" infrastructure just for visitors. It built a summer programming apparatus Santa Clara has never really had, and the back half of July is when locals actually get to use it.
